is algorithm driven, the latter was more sys engineering focused. Inktomi's downfall was fighting battles on two fronts, in search engine and content warehousing (competing with Akamai), while none of the areas at the time provided scalable biz models.
Scalable technology != scalable biz.
Google figure the last one out, for that Larry and Sergey should be perpetually grateful to Eric Schmidt.
